The most expensive new Toyota you can buy in the US is a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . When did these get so expensive and do they really sell any $80k+ Land Cruisers? I know they are supremely capable and have a legendary history, but this just doesn't make sense to me. No wonder I haven't seen any new ones around...

Honestly speaking, I would not ever spend upwards of 40k on any Toyota. That's like RR or used G-Class money. I also never understood the appeal of buying an Avalon for the same reason.

cruiser has been expensive for a long time. Just is. I am not sure if Lexus is still making the more expensive version. IMHO not worth it anymore since it doesnt have the same off road cred at it did into the early 2000's

are cars getting more expensive, or is the dollar just worth less?

They are. The LX570 starts at $82k compared to the Toyota's $79k. The Lexus even has 2 extra horsepower.

haha love it. Just not as awesome as when they had true 4 wheel drive. They dont even do a low range anymore, right? Wonder if the badge alone gives it 2 extra hp

It's always been really expensive though.

Interesting. I had heard in the 2000s, at the peak of the SUV craze, that the demographics of the Land Cruiser buyer were some of the highest net worth of ANY brand. Maybe it is an attempt at inconspicuous consumption - a Lexus equal, for Lexus money, but without the Lexus cachet.

i'd get one if I could. Screw the played out Range Rover. The least amount of time in the service department the better :]

I think all new cars are getting more expensive, and some cars are getting very much more expensive. It is super easy to find new half-ton pickups in the $50k range. A new loaded Suburban is $60k, and an Escalade is $80k.

I heard the 2 extra horsepower comes from the fewer lines on the Lexus badge compared to the Toyota badge because you know, Aero and stuff.

RR money isn't $40k... unless you want an Evoque or LR4. The RR Sport starts above $60k and RR around $75-80k.

Right sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I meant, 80k+ is RR or used G-Class money.

I was just stating that I personally am not paying more than 40K for a Toyota.

FUN FACT

YOU CAN BUY A PRIUS PLUGIN-HYBRID FOR NEARLY $40K ($38k!)

This conversation came up a while ago and someone made an excellent point that I think is completely true: it's expensive because it has to be. While its natural habitat in North America is the outlet mall, around the less hospitable locations in the world, this is the benchmark for safe, reliable and capable transportation. The UN uses them. You're paying top dollar for the engineering, manufacturing and materials so that whatever crap you drive it into, it can get you out.

Inflation is a bitch. Most people freaking out about pricetags aren't considering CPI. Cars are generally cheaper today, inflation adjusted, for what you get than what they were 20 years ago, by and large.

Case in point: the Toyota Supra. In 1998, its MSRP ranged from $30-40k. Today, inflation adjusted, that's roughly $45-60k. People would shit a brick if Toyota popped out a $60k Supra today, but relatively speaking it's the same price.

A 2000 Land Cruiser started at $70k in 2013 dollars. So, the question becomes, have they added $10k worth of content? A tough question to answer, but I don't think it's absurd to suggest that they've added that in accouterments and finishing/
